Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie contributes to the life of its neighbouring communities by getting involved in major events that regulate their lives. The company also invites them to share in its own life by inviting them to visit the Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie site.
Since 2001, Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie has been a partner of the Yaté Festival, renamed in 2005 as Yaté’s Products Festival. This event brings together all those who play a part in Yaté’s social life and its 4 Tribes (Unia, Waho, Touaourou and Goro) actively participate in it. Produce from the land and the sea is available to the general public there, together with cooked dishes and craft work. For Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie, this Festival represents a truly privileged moment for exchange, discussion and sharing. Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie’s commitment demonstrates its desire to actively become involved in community life.
Since 2004, Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie has been financing the Goro Seafood Festival, a veritable showcase of the extensive range of seafood and fish that this tribe of fishermen has to offer. This large scale festival now takes place in November each year.
In addition to offering financial backing, Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie has a stand there to provide visitors with quality information on the South plant project, carry out technical demonstrations, organise free visits to the site or propose educational games relating to the project.
Although the town of Noumea is not an immediate neighbour, it remains a meeting place for all the surrounding communities. Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie has therefore agreed to be a major partner in the “Thursdays in the Town Centre”, a street entertainment organised by the Noumea Town Centre Association every Thursday evening from February to December and covering various topics. Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie takes part on these Thursdays when the topic is related to its activity.
An extensive programme of site visits has been set up by Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie’s Communications Team that believes that the best way to understand the project is to go and see for oneself where it is located and how the work is progressing. Between 2000 and 2005, 4,000 people visited the plant and mine sites, including 1,600 in 2005.
Our neighbours are the first to be asked to visit the site, whether it be with their educational institution or with their association. Since the beginning of 2006 visits are also available to individuals. The Communications Department organises a group visit once enough people have registered. Open Days are organised on an ad hoc basis, especially for employees’ families.
