As a corporate citizen, Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie is aware of its responsibilities in the area of environmental protection and committed to taking every possible step to minimise the environmental impact of its project, whether on the natural and physical environment or on the human environment.
As its name suggests, the hydrometallurgy process used in the Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie plant requires large quantities of water. The plant must have access to a reliable and abundant water supply; on the other hand, unrecycled water used during the process (two thirds are recycled) represents liquid waste which requires treatment before being discharged.
New Caledonia’s extreme south has a nutrient-poor soil with high iron content (natural acidic soil environment); it is also exposed to frequent and heavy rainfalls.
