PRONY ENERGIES THERMAL POWER STATION

Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie has made available the land necessary for the company Prony Energies to build a coal-fired power-station consisting of two 50 megawatt units. The project’s energy requirements require 50 % of the total energy output, and so the other 50% will be used to supply the growing needs of the public distribution network in New Caledonia.

Coal was chosen as the fuel notably because of the ease of supply, the reduced atmospheric emissions and lower costs.

The construction of the power station itself is being undertaken by Prony Energies. Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie is none the less responsible for the construction of the surrounding infrastructure necessary for its operation.

Construction began in November 2004. The first 50 megawatt unit will be operational in 2008 and the second in 2009.
