Thousands of Caledonians are taking part in the construction of this factory and related infrastructure, either directly for Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie or its construction team, GCT, or via subcontracting companies. In some cases, a contribution by foreign workers is required, particularly by Filipinos, there being no or not enough specialists in New Caledonia, particularly during the peak of construction. Since 2006 over 5,000 workers have been present on the site.
These foreign workers are there on a temporary basis. They have been recruited with care by the construction team (GCT) for a fixed term, for their specific skills and adaptability.
Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie has undertaken to give preference to local recruitment and in order to keep to this undertaking, to offer training courses specific to its jobs, particularly related to operation.
During the factory’s phase of stabilised production, Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie’s aim is to use local labour to fill 90% of the 800 posts necessary for its plant to function. To achieve this, it is relying on existing skills, training and peer mentoring. The factory will actually become operational through recourse to experts who will transfer their knowledge gradually to local staff, to whom they will progressively hand over production.
During the construction phase as during the operational phase, as well as direct jobs, the Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie project will give rise to the creation of hundreds of indirect and spin-off jobs, contributing to the economic and social development of New Caledonia.
