The Safety Department:Safety at Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie means protecting people and property from any kind of aggression including aggression caused by weather conditions.

The Safety Department plays a preventive and anticipatory role that allows active and passive systems to be set up designed to ensure that Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie employees and property is given the best possible protection and shelter from any attack or life threatening conditions.

The Safety Department permanently conducts analyses to avoid any surprises. To do this, on a regular basis it keeps up to date with any developments in social, economic, political and community-based situations in the immediate vicinity of Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie.

The Safety Department reports directly to Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie's Managing Director.

An integral part of the Security Department, the “Crisis Management” Service is an essential element of the Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie organisation.

What is defined as a Crisis at Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie?

Any incident or problem that poses a serious threat to the safety and well-being of people involved in our activities, to financial stability, the environment and Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie’s operations and/or reputation.

What are our priorities?

  • Preserving Lives - The lives of employees, but also the lives of the emergency services personnel (medical, fire, public order, etc), mutual aid partners, contractors, customers, visitors and inhabitants of the neighbouring communities.
  • Protecting the Environment - , land and sea areas that might be damaged in a crisis.
  • Protecting Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie property - buildings, structures and other property, supplies, equipment and raw materials.
  • Protecting the reputation of Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie - partners, shareholders, contractors, the neighbouring communities, government bodies, etc.

What does Crisis Management entail at Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie?

Crisis Management is the method by which the Crisis Management Team takes control of, mitigates and prevents the unfavourable effects of an event getting worse when normal management methods fail.

Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie’s Crisis Management System is a pioneering system as it employs a computerised crisis management system that has proved its effectiveness since it was subsequently adopted by Vale Inco and then every Vale company throughout the world.

Crisis management is conducted in three stages.>The first stage involves developing a structure and plans to manage events that can be foreseen.If the implementation of the latter does not suffice, the Crisis Management Team meets to deal with the event.Lastly, the Crisis Management Team draws up recovery plans so that operations can get back to normal as quickly as possible.


What is a Warning Chain?

A Warning Chain has been developed by Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie in order to save time and be effective in the event of a crisis.The aim is to alert all Vale Inco Nouvelle-Calédonie Department Managers as quickly as possible.Each Department then has its own internal warning chain that is activated by the Department Manager if this proves necessary.

Every employee also has a duty to pass any information relating to an event that is out of the ordinary to his/her supervisor, so that he/she in turn can pass the information on to senior management.

When managing a crisis situation it is essential for information to be passed.
